American Children Are Not Consuming Enough Milk
A recent study from Penn State has found that American children are drinking insufficient amounts of milk and the dairy they are choosing to consume are very high in fat. The study examined a children's daily dairy intake and compared it with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's MyPyramid dairy recommendations. The findings revealed that only 2 to 3 year olds met the MyPyramid dairy recommendations. It was also observed that most children choose to eat more of the highest fat varieties of cheese, yogurt, ice cream, and dairy based toppings.

When your child gets hurt, and complains of pain, what do you use to treat the hurt and the injury?
A new study looks at three commonly used medicines for kids’ pain…and found which one works best.
You’d think that after decades of using tylenol, ibuprofen, and codeine, we’d have a grasp on which is best for pain due to musculoskeletal injuries--things like bruises, and even fractures.
But there hasn’t been a lot of research into this, which is why this new study sheds a lot of light on the issue.

New Epiliepsy Drug for Children
Twelve year old Megan Sinnott was just 4 years old when she had her first seizure. “When she was having a seizure, she was coherent throughout, she could talk to you, she would just have the gyrations of the arms and legs,” says Jeff Sinnott, Megan’s father.
Megan was diagnosed with epilepsy and as she grew older her seizures became more intense. “In the elementary school that she went to, whenever these seizures would come on, they would last a very long time and she did have a couple of occasions at her elementary school years where they actually had to call 9-1-1 and take her to the hospital,” says Jeff.
But, thanks to the drug Diastat, Megan has been able to reclaim her childhood, enjoying life with her seizures now under control. It’s the first and only FDA-approved, acute at-home treatment for patients two years and older who experience bouts of increased seizure activity. “Prolonged seizures can hurt the brain and we don’t want the brain to be hurt. So, what we recommend is that the seizures lasting longer than 5, 10 minutes the best way to break the seizure is with a medication like a Diastat medication which is a sedative,” explains Dr. Steven Wolf of Beth Israel Medical Center.

Antibiotics and Sore Throat Study
When does your child’s sore throat need an antibiotic? It’s an important question, and it appears, many doctors don’t really know the answer.
Sore throats account for six percent of all visits by kids to family practice doctors and pediatricians. So, this is one of the most important reasons to see the doctor. And with the looming worries over antibiotic resistance, over-prescribing these medicines for this problem is a major cause of concern among infectious disease experts.
“Unless she really, really has to take them and there is no other way of her getter better, than I’ll have her take it, otherwise I prefer for if it is a viral infection for it to run its course basically,” says nine year old Nicole’s mom.
