American Children Are Not Consuming Enough Milk
A recent study from Penn State has found that American children are drinking insufficient amounts of milk and the dairy they are choosing to consume are very high in fat. The study examined a children's daily dairy intake and compared it with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's MyPyramid dairy recommendations. The findings revealed that only 2 to 3 year olds met the MyPyramid dairy recommendations. It was also observed that most children choose to eat more of the highest fat varieties of cheese, yogurt, ice cream, and dairy based toppings.

Children of Smokers Are Less Healthy Than They Seem
Children with smoking parents may not be as healthy as they appear.
A study presented at the American Thoracic Society International Conference shows that although children of smokers may not exhibit respiratory problems, they may still be suffering from damage to their airways. Some researchers claim that children of smokers are more likely to have respiratory problems such as puffing, wheezing, and cases of pneumonia. However it is unclear if there is impairment in children who have no respiratory complaints or diagnosed problems.

When your child gets hurt, and complains of pain, what do you use to treat the hurt and the injury?
A new study looks at three commonly used medicines for kids’ pain…and found which one works best.
You’d think that after decades of using tylenol, ibuprofen, and codeine, we’d have a grasp on which is best for pain due to musculoskeletal injuries--things like bruises, and even fractures.
But there hasn’t been a lot of research into this, which is why this new study sheds a lot of light on the issue.

AAP Statement on: Children and Advertising
Are kids being bombarded with way too many ads on tv, the internet, and through every type of media outlet? Are these ads leading to numerous health concerns: from obesity, to promiscuity, to violence?
Tiny eyes and ears are taking in countless ads daily, and the American Academy of Pediatrics is drawing a dramatic line in the sand.
Dr. Victor Strasburger, lead author of the AAP Position Statement “Children, Adolescents, and Advertising” says, “"So I think speaking personally of a parent of two teenagers for me it’'s time to take the “cha-ching” out of childhood ah we’'ve really commercialized childhood and adolescence as much as we possibly can. Unfortunately on a list of the 50 things that you as a parent want to argue with your kid about today, the media are number 54.’"
So, if parents won'’t parent, the AAP wants government to intervene.

Backyard Summer Safety
As soon as the morning summer sun peaks through their bedroom windows, 5 year old Anna and 3 and a half year old Dylan sprint to their backyard paradise.
“We’re always in the yard, all day. And then they even have a little kiddie pool in the yard, which they fill up with all their toys and they play with the hose and that keeps them occupied for hours,” says Anna and Dylan’s mother, Laura Behr.
For many families the backyard is a summer haven…swimming, enjoying swing sets and sand boxes, fill up the days of summer. But, according to medical experts, all too often, blistering sunburn, bad bug bites and pool accidents occur.

Amusement Park Safety
Being somewhat of a daredevil, eleven year old Sophie lives for summer when she can hit monstrous roller coasters and other rides that pack a punch of adrenaline.
“When you deal with someone like my daughter, Sophie, who loves the crazier, the higher the ride, the happier she is, I get worried, especially on the big rides, I am concerned about their safety,” says Sophie’s mom, Suzie Pavlatos.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, nearly 60,000 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries related to amusement park and carnival rides from 1997 to 2004. And, children are exposed to more risk on rides because of their small size. “Height, weight, there is a minimum weight and a maximum weight for rides and all these things need to be taken with respect because those are what keep you from getting injured,” explains Dr. Nelson Rosen of Schneider Children’s Hospital.

With four children, 8 year old Tania, 6 year old Susie, 4 year old Ashley and 2 year old Michael, packing for the annual family vacation is a major production for mom, Antoinette. “I take towels, bathing suits, their wet shoes, medications like Motrin, Tylenol, band aids, of course we take a camera, we take, sun block, “off” for the bugs, we take a beach umbrella, a stroller if possible, wipes, so, basically, I mean everything,” says Antoinette Defalco.
Vacationing with four children, Antoinette considers herself somewhat of a pro when it comes to packing up the troops for some summer fun away from home. “The most common thing that can happen from my experience with four children is Benadryl, because they can get hives or they can be allergic to the chemicals in the pool,” says Antoinette.
According to medical experts, many parents are not as mindful as Antoinette. “Most travelers in general are unprepared for illness on vacation and with children the smaller they are, the more of a risk any illness can be. The most common travel related health problem is auto accidents so the most important piece of advice to give parents traveling with young children is bring that car seat along, make sure to use seat belts,” says Dr. Edward Chapnick of Maimonides Medical Center.

Dogs Bites and Kids
They’re man’s best friend--but are they best buddies with kids?
New research provides a word of caution to parents or parents to be---because dog bites among kids are very common.
This study is a little shocking, a little saddening, but a terrific piece of advice for parents: that even the friendliest of dogs can be dangerous to kids, depending on the age of the child, the training of the dog, and most importantly, the degree of supervision an adult has when a child and a dog are together.
Tracy Ann Carter has two kids and two dogs; Benny the dog was first. “I wanted an obedient dog, a well trained dog, since he is 120 pounds, that was his potential, ya know he was only 60 at the time, but to grow into huge dog, he needed to be trained properly, especially with the children,”

It’s perhaps the worst thing parents could experience: finding their newborn baby has quietly died while sleeping overnight.
Sadly, this happens too often as a result of SIDS--sudden infant death syndrome. Although some specific cases have been understood, the cause of many cases of SIDS is still unknown. SIDS is the most common cause of infant deaths beyond the first month of life in the U.S.
“Every day is something new, the smiles, the giggles…his personality is developing now. It’s so much fun,” says Cori Attali, clearly enjoying every aspect of being a new mom to five-and-a-half month old Jack.

Nancie Tieri is your typical eight and a half month old baby.
“She is at that stage where she puts everything in her mouth, and crawls everywhere,” says Josephine Tieri, Nancie’s mother.
Josephine knows that she has to think about her child’s safety in the home and that her baby girl’s exploring could be putting her health at risk. “There are toxins that could be in my home that could endanger my child. It’s crucial for parents to think about every aspect of child safety in the home.”
