HEART FAILURE CARE
Is your hospital one of the many which fall short in providing the correct care for heart failure, and are as a result putting patients at risk for dying unnecessarily? You’d think if you go to an accredited hospital, you would get a uniformly high standard of care, especially when it comes to heart failure treatment, one of the most common reasons for hospital admission. Further, this quality of care should extend from the time of admission to a careful hospital discharge summary.

BYPASS VS. STENT STUDY
Tonight we have some important health news that will touch many of us. Coronary artery disease is the most common cause of death in America. Doctors use two main methods of treating the condition: heart bypass surgery and coronary stents.
This study is important because it looks at the treatment of people with so called multi-vessel disease--where more than one heart artery is blocked. And the study shows, in most, if there’s more than one artery blocked, the way to go is with surgery.

HEART ATTACK TRANSFER
There is a warning tonight for those at risk of a heart attack. New research says you should make sure you or someone you love is taken to a hospital that can perform the procedure called angioplasty.
The fact is, many patients who live in outlying areas are not transported directly to a hospital that can perform this important procedure which opens up blocked arteries. And if then the person is transferred to a hospital that does do it, in many cases, it’s simply too late.

64 SLICE CT SCANNER
62-year old Howard Fuhr was taken by surprise when he went to see his heart specialist. “I had an abnormal –um—stress test and um the next thing that my cardiologist suggested was having an angiogram and I wasn’t sure if I was ready to go that step,” says Howard.
So, he looked for the most cutting-edge technology he could find… What'’s known as the “64-slice CT scanner. “I sought it out and I consulted with my cardiologist and we both agreed that this would be the way to go at this time,” states Howard.

HEART MYOBLAST CELL INJECTION
A new heart attack treatment uses myoblast cells from different parts of the body to regenerate damaged heart muscle. Doctors have shown how they can regenerate parts of a heart that have been destroyed by a heart attack. The cells for this heart attack treatment come from the patient’s own thigh muscles.
This new heart attack treatment has the potential to be a huge advance in cardiology.
It used to be that once a piece of heart died after a heart attack, it couldn’t be brought back.

ATRIAL FIBRILLATION STUDY
If you’re over the age of forty, new research shows you are at high risk for developing a common heart rhythm problem called atrial fibrillation.
According to the American Heart Association, atrial fibrillation affects more than two million Americans. The problem can lead to a more significant one: stroke.
Now the latest study shows atrial fibrillation is very common, and should be screened for on a regular basis.

What is the best way to determine if someone, who has no symptoms, is at risk for a heart attack or stroke? The best test might still be the best kept secret in medicine. Electron Beam CT (EBCT) uses CAT scan technology to look inside the coronary arteries to detect calcium in the coronary artery. ECBTs have been used, albeit in relatively speaking sparse fashion, for over a half a decade now. There is a growing body of evidence that shows that an ECBT can be useful for detecting those at risk for cardiovascular disease. The latest research combines the data from several studies and confirms that the ECBT is a better predictor of heart disease than other more established tests like blood pressure measurement.
