Are Certain Thin People Actually Obese?

Are Certain Thin People Actually Obese? Stories

Research suggests that thin people may not be as healthy as they appear.

Medical researchers at Imperial College, London, have shown that people with low or average body weight may not be healthy on the inside. These doctors believe that internal fat surrounding various vital organs could be as detrimental to health as is the more obvious (subcutaneous) fat found directly under the skin. This internal lining of fat is invisible to the naked eye but is detected by MRI machines that create "fat maps" displaying where concentrations of this internal fat are stored.

Vigorous Exercise with Age

Vigorous Exercise with Age Stories

People who sustain a highly active lifestyle gain less weight as they age.

A new study by Paul Williams of Berkeley Lab has found that maintaining a vigorously active lifestyle can help offset gaining weight with age. The data comes from the National Runners' Health Study which conducted 20 years of research on 120,000 runners. The runners maintained a weekly mileage over the course of 7 years. The men and women who ran over 30 miles per week gained half the weight of others that ran less than 15 miles.

Cholesterblock

Cholesterblock Stories

So maybe one of your New Year’s resolutions is to get that cholesterol under control!

There are so many ways to get your cholesterol down: diet, exercise, and medicines like the statins—like pravachol--which lower cholesterol by 30 to 40 percent.

There are also medicines which block cholesterol absorption and lower cholesterol another 10 to 15 percent.

So, where does the supplement Cholesterblock come in…and can it work just as well?

Cholesterblock is an over the counter supplement that claims to block the absorption of cholesterol.

The key ingredient: beta-sitosterol--a plant sterol derived from soybeans.

“It is the plant version of cholesterol so then the body sees it in the cholesterol tract your body absorbs it instead of cholesterol and it has been shown in extensive studies to block the absorption of cholesterol from food up to 42 percent,” says Peter Meyer, Founder of Heart Guardian, the company that makes Cholesterblock.

And that, the company claims, reduces the LDL, or bad cholesterol, by ten to twelve percent on average.

Cholestrol Suppliments

Cholestrol Suppliments Stories

The supplement called policosonol (poly—kos-uh-nol) has been widely used as a nutritional supplement. it’s not a medicine, but many insist it is highly effective at lowering the total and bad, or LDL cholesterol levels.

When Harriet Paul was diagnosed with high cholesterol, her choice was to avoid the statins--the widely used cholesterol lowering medicines--and instead use policosonol. “I’ve read so much about it, I thought I would try it rather than have medication I try alternative medicine before I go to this other stuff that can give you so many negative symptoms,” says Harriet.

Policosanol is a natural substance produced from the waxy coating of sugar cane. There are many policosanol products on the market, available over the counter, without a prescription. And most studies--in fact, 79 out of 80--have shown it is indeed effective.

Dr. Spyros Mezitis, an endocrinologist at Lenox Hill Hospital, says, “In some patients in my practice I’ve seen a drop of ten to 15 percent in the total cholesterol and the bad cholesterol.”

Americans VS Brits:

Americans VS Brits: Stories

Its been, 230 years to be exact since we declared our independence from Britain, and subsequently won that war.

But in the long run, we may not be better off than the British, at least, when it comes to our health.

Talk about the good stuff: Fish and chips and Shepard’s pie--a delicious heart attack waiting to happen!!

But those are British food…not American! Not that we don’t like it…

Still, when comparing our health status to that of the Brits, new research in the Journal of the American Medical Association isn’t favorable for Americans.
