Pat Brough had been suffering for years with cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart muscle becomes inflamed and doesn’t work as well as it should. “I often experienced severe shortness of breath. I would just find myself unable to get my breath. I would wake up in the middle of the night gasping like somebody just put a pillow over my head,” explains Pat. Pat’s health began to deteriorate rapidly. She was one step away from needing a heart transplant when she made the decision to have the heart jacket procedure. “My family flew in from California to see me. The heart pump is a small piece of technology that may one day be able to save thousands of lives, the lives of people who die waiting for a heart transplant. “There is no limit on the number of devices and machines that you can make whereas there is a limit on the number of human hearts that you can obtain,” says Dr. James Macgovern of Allegheny General Hospital.
