FDA Approves New Contraceptive Pill Lybrel Stories

The FDA approves an oral contraceptive that also eliminates menstruation.

Wyeth's oral contraceptive Lybrel is now approved by the FDA to eliminate monthly menstrual periods. The drug has a lower level of synthetic hormones than other oral contraceptives and must be taken 365 days a year. According to a study by Wyeth, 59 percent of women had no periods after six months but 18% dropped out due to menstrual spotting.

Natalie is grateful that she listened to her body. It helped doctors in her cervical cancer detection and treatment.
“I had one missed period and for me that wasn’t normal, so I went to the doctor,” says Natalie.
A pap smear revealed that at only 27 years old, Natalie had cervical cancer.
“I had a hysterectomy and I had radiation,” she says. Her situation could have been worse if her cervical cancer detection had been delayed any further.
