Eye Diseases Are Rising Amongst the Elderly, But Few See Risk
The American Academy of Opthalmology finds that most Americans are unaware of the risks presented by age-related eye diseases, according to a health survey of 1,200 Americans. The populations most at risk for age related retinal diseases such as cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration are unaware of the factors that make them susceptible.

High Sugar Diet May Effect Eyesight
A diet high in sugar and starch may make the eyes more vulnerable to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the most common cause of vision loss in the US.
A new study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition tracked dietary information from over 4,000 participants aged 55-80 or 8,0000 eyes which, as some participants developed AMD in one eye and not the other, is how they were tracked. The participants completed dietary surveys and had their eyes checked for AMD. The surveys listed over 90 foods, and asked how often they were eaten. The researchers were particularly interested in foods that had a high glycimic index, like sugar and white flour.

Air Force Allows Pilots With Lasik to Fly
For the first time, the US Air Force is allowing aspiring pilots and aircrew members to fly even if they have had LASIK eye surgery.
Since 2001, the Air Force has permitted applicants to try for spots as pilots or aircrew members if they have had a corrective eye surgery, known as PRK (photo refractive keratectomy). The Air Force had said it needed more time to evaluate LASIK, a newer procedure.

Sutureless Cornea Transplant Surgery
“I could barely see, like when I would get up in the morning everything was so foggy. The first thing that was in my mind was that, wow, maybe I’m going blind,” says Dyeane Dunn.
Dyeane Dunn’s corneas were damaged. She would need a cornea transplant to replace the diseased tissue. Doctors were able to perform a sutureless cornea transplant…an innovative technique that replaces only the damaged cell layers.
“This is a phenomenal procedure because it is only taking away what is bad, it is also not causing changes in the surface of the cornea so you don’t have to worry about dealing with lots of sutures later on in the eye, if patients don’t take care of them it can cause rejections later on in the eye, can cause infections, they cause astigmatism, irregularities, by putting in only what is needed it’s the best way to operate,” explains Dr. Michael Ehrenhaus of Long Island College Hospital.

Bioterrorism is one of the country’s biggest post-9-11 concerns.
How quickly doctors can detect an agent of bio-war will determine how many people will be affected.
We’ve had a taste of how even very small releases of bio-terror agents can wreak havoc: the anthrax attacks after 9-11; the sarin nerve gas attacks in Japanese subways.
The threat of bio-war is very real today. Doctors making the first diagnosis need to be armed to be able to make a quick diagnosis.
Bio-weapons are diseases we simply don’t see. So, the key to protecting the public as the final line of defense is early diagnosis.
That’s where an E.R.-based computer program called visual dx comes in.
“Visual DX is really an incredibly powerful program that helps us in a number of ways but it was directed to us particularly to help us diagnose bioterrorism or potential bioterrorism cases,” says Dr. Lewis Kohl, Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Long Island College Hospital. “You can go in and put in a patient symptoms, you can describe what the rash looks like, what part of the body it is, how old the patient is.”

Remedy or Rip Off: Nature's Tears
If you suffer from dry eyes, and many of us do to some extent, you might be heading to the drug store for an over the counter eye drop.
One of them, though, is different than many of the others, not because of what it has, but rather, what it doesn’t have.
So is it a remedy or a rip-off for dry eyes?
First to answer thatl you do need to know that dry eyes can be a very serious problem for some. There is a prescription drug for those who suffer terribly.
And for those with mild to moderate cases, there are many over the counter remedies, most of which will do a good job.
Ah, but there’s one, called nature’s remedy, that the makers say has a very, very special ingredient, which makes it stand out among all the others.
The ad on the website exclaims, “Discover the secret of nature’s tears eye mist an entirely different approach to eye care without eye drops. Nature’s tears eye mist naturally supplements the tear film with biologic aqua.”
Biologic aqua!
For those who do not speak Spanish, aqua means water.
“Absolute premium standard grade of pure all natural water,” says the narrator on the website ad.
I’d hope so; we paid 13.99 for two whole ounces.
The director of the company, biologic aqua, which make’s nature’s tears, Sharon Kleyne, told me not all waters are equal. “There is a theory out there the wetter the water, the cleaner the water,” she said. I asked, “Wait, there’s different grades of wetness to water?” “Yes,” she replied.

Contact Lenses and Eye Infect
“Sometimes I don’t take out my contact lenses, once in a while I sleep in them, I don’t wash my hands thoroughly sometimes,” says Janie Medina.
If this sounds familiar you could be putting yourself at risk for a dangerous fungal eye infection.
“I have soft lens, they are monthly lens, I have to change them out every month but sometimes I try to extend it a little more. You can start feeling the protein in the eyes and on the lens and you can start getting headaches on your eye, you start squinting, and it definitely tells you that you have to change the lens out,” says Janie.

Sunglasses
So we’re in the meat of the summer now: it’s July 4th weekend, the days are long, and that means lots of sunshine.
But are you protecting your eyes by wearing sunglasses?
The fact is you can look awesome and do something really really healthy for you also ..by wearing sunglasses to protect the eyes.
Didja know that in the short-term, people who spend long hours on the beach without adequate eye protection can develop photokeratitis, which is a reversible sunburn of the cornea. It’s painful and can result in temporary loss of vision.
Dr. Mark Former, an ophthalmologist with Former Eye Centers, says, “Sunglasses are extremely important, many people think that sunglasses are just for fashion, they are not they are mainly for protection, the main things that we try to protect against with sunglasses are cataracts, macular degeneration ,growths on the cornea which are called tritium and skin cancer at the lids.”
