It’s perhaps the worst thing parents could experience: finding their newborn baby has quietly died while sleeping overnight.
Sadly, this happens too often as a result of SIDS--sudden infant death syndrome. Although some specific cases have been understood, the cause of many cases of SIDS is still unknown. SIDS is the most common cause of infant deaths beyond the first month of life in the U.S.
“Every day is something new, the smiles, the giggles…his personality is developing now. It’s so much fun,” says Cori Attali, clearly enjoying every aspect of being a new mom to five-and-a-half month old Jack.

Doctors have developed a lifesaving treatment for a rare form of muscular dystrophy called Pompe disease.
Pompe is an inherited disorder--both parents have to have the defective gene, which is not a common thing. Pompe is a rare and fatal nerve and muscle disorder caused by the lack of an enzyme which breaks down sugar—glycogen--in the body.

They’re the guys on the baseball diamond that get the brunt of the bangup: catcher’s get run over, they destroy their knees by crouching all day long. And now, there’s evidence that they suffer significant hand trauma, perhaps, because their gloves aren’t protecting them enough.
It’s interesting in that modern catcher’s mitts have less padding than gloves used prior to the 1960’s. The glove is more flexible, allows a better handle on the ball, an easier release if the runner is going. But the downside is that perhaps, it’s putting the catchers at risk for short term and long term hand injury.
