A nose job without surgery? At a recent meeting of the American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery, Alexander Rivcin, MD, presented results on a new procedure, "the non-surgical nose job". This paper highlights the 370 patients on whom he preformed the new procedure over the course of 3 and one-half years. This is the first study that followed patients with the procedure through a several year period.

This procedure developed by Dr. Rivcin uses injections of Radiesse to disguise nasal deformities like bumps or deviations, boost underdeveloped nasal bridges, and raise or straiten drooping tips. The results of this procedure last for about a year, at the end of which patients have the option of using permanent filler like ArteFill.

This procedure could potentially have strong demand, as rhinoplasty was the second most common surgical procedure, accounting for over 300,000 surgeries in 2006 alone. It also has the possibility of becoming popular among teens. While plastic surgery remains fairly rare among teenagers, accounting for less than 2% of procedures preformed overall, rhinoplasty is the most common procedure among teens. Those concerned about the appropriateness of plastic surgery, especially on teens, might be more open to this cosmetic procedure.
