Destination Singapore- Jurong Bird Park

Singapore is one of the most popular Asian tourist destinations and has an array of tourist destinations within its boundaries. Jurong Bird Park is one such tourist destination in Singapore which is known for its unique theme as a Bird Park. It has incorporated several techniques within the park to give the visitors an experience of the natural habitat of 600 species of birds that it houses.

The Jurong Bird Park is a 20.2 hectare open-concept park built on the western slope of Jurong hill. The park is a home for more than 8.000 birds from 600 species including penguins, flamingoes, macaws, hornbills, owls, cockatoos, puffins etc. One is sure to be overwhelmed by the variety of exhibits in the park.

- The Waterfall Aviary is the world's largest walk-in aviary in which there are more than 1,500 free-flying birds. Visitors can hop aboard the Panorail to catch the spectacle of birds flying in the aviary. This is the only monorail in the world. The Jurong Falls is located within the Waterfall Aviary is 30mts high and is the tallest man-made waterfall in the world.

- The Southeast Asian Birds Aviary is a collection of over 200 species of Southeast Asian birds. Visitors can take a walk in the aviary and experience a daily stimulated thunderstorm followed by a cool, light drizzle.

- There is then the Lory Loft which houses over 1000 free-flying lories and lorikeets which fly to the visitors once they offer a special honey mix to these birds. The entire ambience adheres to a Rainforest vale of tropical Northern Australia.

- The park has a section for about 200 penguins belonging to 5 different species and they live in a recreated Antarctic setting in the park.

- The park also encompasses Asia's first nocturnal bird house featuring a system of reverse lighting converting day to night and vise versa. Here one can watch 17 species of nocturnal birds in their nocturnal surroundings.

- There is also a section for flightless birds in the park and another one for 7 species of pelicans.

There are two shows in the Jurong Bird Park namely Birds and Buddy Show and Birds of Prey Show. The Birds and Buddies Show showcases a large number of species of performing birds in a single act. Besides highlighting the antics of talented birds like the mimicking cockatoos, this show is also a window for visitors to the natural behavior of birds like pelicans, flamingos and hornbills. In Birds of Prey Show, visitors can watch birds of prey such as eagles, hawks and falcons in a stimulated act of hunt.

The Jurong Bird Park has received many awards including the 2007 ASEANTA winner for Best ASEAN New Tourist Attraction and the Tourism Host of the year Award for 1999, 2000 and 2003.
