The Thyroid
Watch Video
The thyroid gland lies in front of the neck and has two lobes connected by an isthmus. It is an endocrine organ whose responsibility is to secrete a hormone that controls the body's growth and metabolism.
These hormones are two iodene based metabolism related hormones T3 and T4. These hormones are further regulated by the activity of the hypothalamus, another hormones producing part of the brain. The thyroid cans under-produce its hormone resulting in weight gain, sluggishness and lethargy. Or less commonly, an increase in the body’s internal thyroid hormone production leads to an increase in the body's internal thermostat. This manifests itself as heat sensitivity, weight loss, an enlarged thyroid, also known as goiter, as well as hyperactivity and sleep loss. Ultimately, the thyroid gland regulates body weight, energy level and heart rate, as well as skin and muscle condition. Its proper maintenance is often achievable through modern medicine and pharmaceuticals and it is critical in maintaining your health.
