Reyes disease is a early childhood disease which can strike without warning. It only affects children 12 years and under. All internal organs can be affected. With the brain and liver the most prominent, the cause of Reyes Syndrome remains obscure; a link to common aspirin has been established among young people. Symptoms can include stupor, lethargy, delirium and screaming. While the cause of Reyes Syndrome is uncertain, it must be treated as a medical emergency. Survival rates have risen rapidly over the past 20 years due to effective treatment of brain swelling by the use of medications such as cortisone.
