Yogurt Consumption Linked to Healthier Body Weights for Women

Yogurt Consumption Linked to Healthier Body Weights for Women

Research conducted by The General Mills Bell Institute of Health and Nutrition finds that women who eat yogurt frequently are less likely to be overweight and more likely to meet the recommended daily intake of important nutrients, like calcium and vitamin D. The fourteen day study followed the diets of approximately 3,000 women ages 19 and older. Thirteen percent of these women ate three or more servings of yogurt over a two week period. In this group, the women on average had a 15% lower body mass index compared with women who consumed no yogurt.

American Children Are Not Consuming Enough Milk

American Children Are Not Consuming Enough Milk

A recent study from Penn State has found that American children are drinking insufficient amounts of milk and the dairy they are choosing to consume are very high in fat. The study examined a children's daily dairy intake and compared it with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's MyPyramid dairy recommendations. The findings revealed that only 2 to 3 year olds met the MyPyramid dairy recommendations. It was also observed that most children choose to eat more of the highest fat varieties of cheese, yogurt, ice cream, and dairy based toppings.

Reducing Stress Lowers Risk of Cardiovascular Problems

Reducing Stress Lowers Risk of Cardiovascular Problems

A Review in The Lancet reveals the importance of healthy lifestyle choices to reduce stressors related to cardiovascular risk factors. Researchers from John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore examined records between 1990 to 2006. They observed how stress affects the sympathetic nervous system, impacts physiology, and the effect it has on the cardiovascular system. Lead author, Daniel Brotman, claims "Acute physical stressors such as sugery, trauma, and intense physical exertion are well known triggers of cardiovascular events. Emotional stressors are increasingly recognized as precipitants of such events."

Resistance and Aerobics Exercise Found to Improve Blood Sugar Control

Resistance and Aerobics Exercise Found to Improve Blood Sugar Control

A recent randomized controlled trial published in latest edition of "Annals of Internal Medicine" found that both aerobic and resistance exercise improved glycemic and blood sugar control for people with type 2 diabetes. The study observed over 250 adults between ages 39 and 70 who were not exercising regularly and had type 2 diabetes. The study participants were divided into four groups: 45 minutes of aerobics three times a week, 45 minutes of resistance training three times a week, 45 minutes each of both three times a week, and no exercise. Each participant was evaluated for changes in their A1C value - a percentage that reflects changes in blood sugar concentrations.

Pregnancy Weight Gain Recommendation Expected to Change

During this fall, the Institute of Medicine is expected to start gathering scientific evidence to support how much weight pregnant women should gain. The current guidelines, which were announced in 1990, recommends that women with low body mass index scores should gain 40 pounds, women with normal scores should gain 25-35 pounds, and obese women should gain 15 pounds. Obesity May Be Contagious

Obesity May Be Contagious

According to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, if someone in a social network becomes obese, those closely connected to them have a greater propensity for becoming obese as well. The strongest demonstration of this effect occurs among friends, not within a family or among those sharing a household. There was no apparent consideration of groups of otherwise strangers who come together in organized settings for the purpose of weight loss. With some diet programs, social support has been shown to be beneficial.

Super Summer Foods

Super Summer Foods

Summer is a great season to enjoy what nature has to offer - fresh fruits and vegetables. Whether you're trying to lose weight or just want to eat healthy, summer provides your pick of produce. Summer fruits and vegetables in addition to having lower calories than snack foods, offer antioxidants.

Antioxidants are micronutrients that play a role in the preventing chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, stroke, and arthritis. The best way to get antioxidants is not from supplements, but from fresh fruits and vegetables. (However, due to poor dietary choices and habits, and declining food nutrient composition, most Americans probably need to supplement to obtain optimal levels)

Are Certain Thin People Actually Obese?

Are Certain Thin People Actually Obese?

Research suggests that thin people may not be as healthy as they appear.

Medical researchers at Imperial College, London, have shown that people with low or average body weight may not be healthy on the inside. These doctors believe that internal fat surrounding various vital organs could be as detrimental to health as is the more obvious (subcutaneous) fat found directly under the skin. This internal lining of fat is invisible to the naked eye but is detected by MRI machines that create "fat maps" displaying where concentrations of this internal fat are stored.
