Cancer Patients In Need of Psychological and Social Support

Cancer Patients In Need of Psychological and Social Support

A recent report from the Institute of Medicine addresses the toll that cancer therapies have on patients' mental and emotional state that may potentially cause other health problems. Cancer treatments save and prolong many people's lives; however, care that focuses solely on eradicating tumors without acknowledging a patient's well-being can increase the patient's suffering and affect their ability to follow through on treatment. The report proposes that oncology care providers use a new standard of care that accomplishes three goals: screen patients for distress and other problems, coordinate and connect patients with health care or service providers who can treat these problems, and periodically re-evaluate patients to determine if patient care needs adjustment.

All Types of Alcohol Linked to Breast Cancer Risk

All Types of Alcohol Linked to Breast Cancer Risk

A recent study by Kaiser Permanente Researchers has found that the effects of alcohol on breast cancer are the same, regardless of whether a woman drinks wine, beer, or liquor. The ethyl alcohol found in those drinks and the quantity consumed are the factors that weigh heavily on breast cancer risk. Researchers believe the increased risk from three or more drinks a day is similar to the increased breast cancer risk from smoking a pack of cigarettes a day or more. They claim that "Population studies have consistently linked drinking alcohol to an increased risk of female breast cancer, but until now there has been little data, most of it conflicting, about an independant role played by the choice of beverage type."

Is there a relation between Deodorants and breast cancer?

Is there a relation between Deodorants and breast cancer?

British scientists measured the aluminum content inside of breast tissue to find a relation between breast cancer and deodorants. They found that there is a significantly higher portion in the outer regions of the breast that have the greatest exposure to antiperspirant. This recent study identified a specific distribution of aluminum in breast tissue which may be associated with breast cancer.

Five Measures for Preventing 100,000 American Deaths a Year

Five Measures for Preventing 100,000 American Deaths a Year

New research by the Partnership for Prevention suggests that over 100,000 Americans lives could be spared each year by increasing five preventive steps. The report claims that there are serious shortcomings in disease prevention across the US, especially for ethnic minorities.

The greatest preventive impact would be 45,000 lives saved from more adults taking a daily low dose of aspirin to prevent heart disease. Smoking cessation would save 42,000 lives. Adults having regular annual cancer screenings would save 14,000 lives a year. For adults aged 50 of over, an annual flu shot would save 12,000 more lives. Additionally, nearly 4,000 lives would be saved by increasing the number of women aged 40 or over who have been screened for breast cancer in the past two years. The report also suggests that 30,000 cases of pelvic inflammatory disease could be prevented if sexually active young women were screened for chlamydial infection in the past year.

Electricity Can Slow the Progression of Certain Cancers

Electricity Can Slow the Progression of Certain Cancers

New research in the August Issue of Physics Today explains how low-intensity electric fields can disrupt the division of cancer cells and slow the growth of brain tumors. The team of researchers used alternating electric fields that shift electric particles in cells back and forth hundreds of thousands of times per second. These low-intensity alternating electric fields were once thought to only heat cells but after several years of experiments, the researchers have shown the fields to disrupt cell division in tumor cells placed on a glass dish.

The Health Implications of Pollution

The Health Implications of Pollution

The presence of even low levels of air pollution can increase a person's risk of early death, according to research published in the Thorax journal of respiratory medicine. The researchers examined the air quality in different regions of Britain during different time periods as well as national data on the causes of death-more than 5000 adults over age 30 were included.

Obesity Drugs May Fight Cancer

Obesity Drugs May Fight Cancer

Many scientific advances start with serendipity. Scientists at Wake Forest University have made a surprising discovery - an obesity drug can kill cancer cells. The researchers are now using the findings to develop more effective cancer drugs.

This study, published in the online version of Nature Structural and Molecular Biology is the first to report that the drug oralist,Xenical® or Alli® interacts and binds with a protein found in tumor cells causing cell death. The project started when Steven Kridel, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Cancer Biology, analyzed prostate cancer cells to see which enzymes were expressed at high levels in the hope of developing treatments that would inhibit those enzymes and stop tumor growth.

BRCA Breast Cancer Genes

BRCA Breast Cancer Genes

Women who have BRCA breast cancer genetic mutations are just as likely to survive as other women who get breast cancer, according to a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Women with BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are more likely to get breast cancer. It was also widely believed that those with hereditary breast cancer from BRCA1 mutations had worse outcomes. This new study, tracked two groups of women with breast cancer in Israel, one with the inherited BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations, and the other without. The researchers found no significant difference in death rates between the two groups. Between 5 and 10 percent of all breast cancers are hereditary and are more likely to occur with women from certain ethnic backgrounds like people of Ashkenazi (central or eastern European) Jewish heritage [one reason why the study was done in Israel].
